The Clypidus Experiment: An Investigative Look at Deep Linking

Posted by | Posted in Experiment | Posted on 19-07-2009

Deep Linking is the practice of building links and authority to the sub-pages of a website. In many cases, this is to help the site rank for various competitive terms rather then trying to get just one single page to rank for numerous terms which can be complicated and tricky to manage.

In this case, let’s go for the term Clypidus - which will also bare rewards if it ranks 1st by the 1st of August (that’s just a few weeks away). So let’s begin, ranking for the nonsensical term of Clypidus shouldn’t be too difficult but managing to actually take the first page, let alone the first result will prove to be more difficult. Let’s explore various things that can be done to help our efforts.

Internal Linking

This is one of the primary baby steps to take, using our already existent site to help funnel traffic and link juice to lend weight to the content.  Ideally your site should already be built to navigate easily and smoothly, if you haven’t done this - you have failed. Accessibility is the most important part of a site, people should never be left wondering what to do or how to get to a piece of content on your site. Good internal link structure will help you ten fold in your efforts.

Link Building

Here’s another overused strategy, link build like there’s no tomorrow. Obviously this isn’t the smartest way to go about it and lots of SEOrs think this is the golden metric used by Google - it’s not. You can go out and build the links yourself or barter for links, or you can straight out just buy links if you don’t have the time to worry about it.  Building a good decent amount of links, but maintaining speed and consistency is paramount. Also you need to allow room for organic growth - that is growth of real backlinks that you haven’t orchestrated or made happen. There are numerous ways to detect organic back links, and while I won’t go into in this article - I’ll let you know that Google definitely knows a few ways to sniff this out.

Results

Well it wasn’t my best effort, but I managed to place 5th and 8th position (5th via proxy of another site and 8th directly through the seosultan subdomain). Admittedly I didn’t put very much work into it, simply just about 2 hours worth of work max (maybe even less). With continued patience and potentially a better keyword or niche, you could easily start attracting a considerable bit more traffic. Imagine having a niche where you’re tapping the long tail not through your main site, which may not rank or be listed at all for your keywords, but through an article that is only vaguely related to the niche.
